The heat tolerance index (HTI) of 16 light colored and 15 dark colored pelage of Santa Inês breed was evaluated. This study was carried out on hot days with BGHI greater than 90. In order to calculate HTI (10 - (RT2 - RT1)) rectal temperature (RT) was recorded at 01:00 p.m. (RT1) after two hours of rest in the shade. Later they were exposed to direct sun light for one hour and then they rested one more hour under shade, when the RT2 was recorded at 03:00 p.m. A completely randomized design was used to analyze hair length (HL), coat thickness (CT), skin temperature (TS) and coat temperature (TC). No differences on RT were observed between light colored and dark colored hair coat ewes, but all of them raised their temperatures (P<0.05) after heat stress. No differences on HTI, CT, HL, and TS were observed between groups, but the black colored hair coat ewes had the highest TC (P<0.05). No effect on heat tolerance between dark colored and light colored hair coat Santa Inês breed in heat conditions is observed. Growth and yield plots have been monitored in the Tapajós region, Pará State, Brazil, since 1981 in four research sites: unlogged primary forest, two areas logged 7 and 13 years before the last assessment, and a secondary forest ca. 50 years old. Diameter increment, mortality and volume increment in these sites are reported. Growth responses were investigated in relation to crown illumination and ecological guild of species. Irrespective of ecological guild, the amount of light received by crowns appeared to produce significant differences in tree growth. A hierarchy of growth rates was observed: rates of diameter increment of intolerant species > tolerant canopy species > understorey tolerant species. Mortality rates were higher for weed species in all study areas except in secondary forest. At this site understorey tolerant species showed higher mortality rates, folio-wed by weed species. Average annual volume increment ranged from 1.6 m' ha-' yr.' in primary unlogged forest to 4.8 m%a-' yr-l in primary logged forest. Commercial species produced just over 1 m3 ha-l yr.' in the logged stands. Establishing cutting cycles in the Tapajós region and other similar sites must have regard to these low increment rates. |
